South End School c1898


Five shillings due to a Rushden reader :- Mr. S. Robinson, 11, Park-place, for his notes on the school group published last week. The names supplied by Mr. Robinson vary slightly from another entrant’s list, but the winner took care to include a general description of the group, and thus enabled the choice to be made in his favour.

Mr. Robinson writes :- The photo was taken thirty-one years ago on Mr. Vann’s lawn, High-street South, and it is a group of scholars from the old National School.

Top row: Cory Walker, Harry Wesley (dead), Harry Swann, Thomas Woods (killed by accident), Jack Burgess (in Canada), Silas Wright (Wymington), Fred Bass (killed in war), Tim Bates (dead).

2nd row: Tom Cook (killed in war), William Spavins, Albert Bird (dead), William Knight, Robert Willmott, Jack Morris, Horace Linnitt, Walter Woods, Sidney Robinson, Ralph Burton.

Girls: Florrie Baker, Emily Knight, Florrie Colburn, Annie Jackson (in Australia), Lily Fountain (dead), Florrie Goodman (in Canada), Ethel Whiting, Nellie Wooding.

4th row: Nellie Boswell, Nellie Pendred, Emily Holdsworth, Eleanor Woods, Margery Eady, Minnie Wilmott (in Canada), Violet Stacey.
