School Board - Election 1877

School Board – In view of the election, to take place on Friday, both sides are making the most strenuous efforts to secure a majority of the Board. On Friday week a meeting of the Church party was held in the National schools, to make arrangements for the successfully carrying on of the contest to hear the report of the canvassers and appoint others, and to take such other steps as were necessary. Mr. F. U. Sartoris and Messrs. Mason and Butcher, the Church candidates, were present. Also on the same evening Messrs. Denton, Colson, and Knight, the Dissenting candidates, met their friends, at the Temperance Hall. The candidates addressed the meeting, and urged their friends to support them. Mr. J. Rice, not being satisfied with the professions of the candidates, mounted the rostrum, and delivered a speech not only on education but also on the subject of trades’ unions, which if it did not interest, certainly amused the audience. Both parties are canvassing from house to house, and it is expected the contest will be a close one.
