Thrapston Police Court Tuesday, Feb. 20th.
Before Mr. S. G. Stopford Sackville (chairman), Mr, W. H, Beauford, and Sir F. L. Robinson.
Rebecca Roberts, Ringstead, v. G. Bull, Leicester. An affiliation summons. Mr. Heygate for the complainant, Mr. Rawlins for defendant. This was a peculiar case. The defendant had not denied the paternity of the child, (which was born on the 2nd October, 1880), but had at once entered into a written agreement to contribute 2s. 6d. per week towards its support. The defendant paid up all arrears up to the 2nd September last, when the payment ceased. Complainant now took out a summons. Mr. Rawlins produced a copy of the agreement, in which a clause providing that the complainant should not annoy the defendant whilst the payments continued. He contended the argument was entered with in order to keep the matter a secret, but he proved that the complainant publicly insulted the defendant at Ringstead Feast, and had also written him abusive letters. Mr. Rawlins also asked for a reduction in the sum paid, as his client was unable to continue payments of 2s. 6d. The Bench made an order for defendant to contribute 2s. per week toward the support of the child with the ordinary costs, 16s. 6d.
